River Stone 2012 Stones Throw (Okanagan Valley, B.C.; $23.90, Riverstone Estate Winery website) After five years selling wine for Trialto Wine Group and then a year on the floor at Railtown’s Ask for Luigi, sommelier Mark McNeil is taking a well-deserved summer break that will include a little European travel. It was his first time trying this “juicy, bright, and balanced” blend of Merlot, Malbec, and Cabernet Sauvignon, which carries gobs of blackberry, currants, chocolate, and cherries—“perfect with grilled meats”.

Vineyard Notes
The grapes for this single vineyard Bordeaux style blend were grown on our estate vineyard, River Rock Vineyards which surrounds our winery in Oliver BC. The vines were on their 10th leaf when fruit was harvested. The vineyards are all south facing slopes where soils are composed of rock, sand and gravel laid down during the last glacial recession.
Production Notes
Each varietal contained in the blend was hand picked and de-stemmed. Approximately 80% of the fruit was left whole, uncrushed. The grapes were cold soaked between 3 - 5 days and then femented in both stainless steel tanks (220 - 2850 litre) and small fermentation totes to maximize skin to juice contact. The wine was transferred, following pressing, to tanks to settle then transferred to barrels where malolactic fermentation was completed. Wine was aged in French oak barrels (33%new) for approximately 14 months. Following aging, blending trials were done, final filtering and bottling resulting in the 2012 Stones Throw blend.
Winemaker Notes
This bold Bordeaux style blend is presently showing ripe varietal fruit character with hints of vanilla, black current, black cherry, plum, wild sage and French oak. It has balanced acidity and moderate tannins that will soften in time.
Food Pairing Notes
Stones Throw is the perfect accompaniment to rich red meats. Try a juicy Alberta beef steak or a Dijon crusted rack of lamb. Also excellent with a variety of medium to strong cheeses.
Other Notes
Stones Throw is an 81% Merlot (12.5% Malbec and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon) blend that took Double Gold at this year's All Canadian Wine Championships (2015) - with all its mouthfilling red and black fruit and savoury notes it was a real delicious little mouthful that was silky and spicy; it ticked all the right boxes for me.
