2013 Malbec Merlot
This dark rich textured wine is a blend of the extrordinary Merlot and Malbec that grow on our site. After pressing the 2013 Malbec for our Rosé the remaining skins were then added to a quantitiy of just picked and pressed Merlot juice and reconstituted bringing solid structure and deep inky colour to the round supple tannins present in our traditionally juicy Merlot. Another bin of Merlot and a bin of Malbec were added to the blend resulting in a medium to full bodied wine with balanced acidity and firm tannins that are softening nicely with age. This Malbec Merlot is just becoming approachable now after 6 years of bottle ageing and should continue to age nicely for another 10 - 20 years.
This full bodied Malbec Merlot was made to showcase the ripe varietal fruit character expressive of our rocky/gravelly terroir. This wine is presently showing spicy dark berry notes that include black cherry, sweet blackberry, black currant and plum with a hint of French oak. It has medium to full body, balanced acidity and firm tannins that are softening nicely with age.
2013 was another great year in the vineyard with the early bud break (April 21) and good early heat followed by a long growing season. With an earlier veraison (July 31st) the grapes for this single vineyard Malbec Merlot blend had a long season for full maturation. All the grapes were grown on our estate vineyard, River Rock Vineyards which surrounds our winery in Oliver BC. The vines were in their 10th leaf when the fruit was harvested. Vineyards are all on south facing slopes where soils are composed of rock, sand and gravel laid down during the last glacial recession.
Following the harvest and cold soak period for our unique Malbec Rose, the grapes were lightly pressed and the juice was transferred to another tank. The pressings from the Malbec Rose were then added to a quantity of just picked and pressed Merlot juice where they were rehydrated. Another bin of Merlot and a bin of Malbec were added to the blend. A select yeast was added following a short cold soak period. Upon completion of fermentation the new wine was pressed and transferred to French oak barrels where it completed malolactic fermentation and barrel aging for approximately 14 months.
This dark rich textured wine started as an idea and was an experiment. It is a true expression of our winemaker Ted Kane's passion for research and development wines. Although we think this wine may be made again, it may never be made in exactly the way this wine was made. We purposefully chose not to release this for 6 years to give this wine ample time to develop in the bottle. It has a long structure that will give this wine extensive cellar potential.
Only 50 cases available.

Very smooth and tasty. After decanting, it really shines!

it is very different from the single varietal malbec and merlot made by Riverstone. It has the structure and astringency of South American malbec and is fullbodied conjoined with the merlot. I am curious to taste how it evolves over time
