Tasting Notes

This rich, inky red wine is made up of 58% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Malbec and 11% Petit Verdot. This is a complex red with velvety tannin and a smooth, long finish. Certainly a wine to ponder and put the world to right with.

A stone's throw is literally the distance that a stone can be thrown but has come to mean any short but undefined distance, like merlot, cabernet sauvignon, malbec and petit verdot planted in close proximity to one another. River Stone is all about the soils beneath these Bordeaux varietal feet, rocky and deep. I like the push and pull of this red, from fruit to salty mineral, tangy sour to sweet and back. It’s purely Oliver-Okanagan, fruity and unhindered by oak despite its 14 months spent in the French variety. Drink 2017-2020. Tasted November 2017. ~ Michael Godel 89 points

Vineyard Notes

2014 was another amazing year in the vineyard with an early bud break (April 21?) and good early heat followed by a long growing season. The grapes for this single vineyard Bordeaux style blend were grown on our estate vineyard, River Rock Vineyards which surround our winery in Oliver, BC.

Production Notes

Each varietal contained in the blend was hand picked, and de-stemmed. Approximately 80% of the fruit was left whole, un-crushed. The grapes were cold soaked between 3 - 5 days and then fermented in both stainless steel tanks (2200 and 2850 litre) and small fermentation totes to maximize skin to juice contact. The wine was transferred, following pressing, to tanks to settle, then transferred to barrels were malolactic fermentation was completed. Wine was aged in French oak barrels (33%new) for approximately 14 months. Following aging, blending trials were done, final filtering and bottling resulted in the 2014 Stones Throw blend.

Winemaker Notes

This bold Bordeaux style blend is presently showing ripe varietal fruit character with hints of vanilla, black current, black cherry, plum, wild sage and French oak. It has balanced acidity and moderate tannins that will soften in time. This wine will age nicely 7 - 10 years.
