Corner Stone - Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot
September 12, 2019
The 2017 Corner Stone blend is true to the rocky soils of River Stone with a rich earthy minerality. This medium to full bodied Bordeaux style blend is rich and concentrated with bold ripe fruit and textures from mature tannins representative of the great growing season. This wine is presently showing plum and dark berry flavours complimented by hints of spice including sage, wild thyme, coffee and chocolate, supported by French oak. It has balanced acidity and moderate velvety tannins that will soften in time.
The winter of 2016 - 2017 was longer and colder than we are accustomed to, but the vines saw little or no damage as a result. Bud break was on May 1st and was followed by good early heat and a long very dry growing season with almost no rain from June to September. We had smokey skies from mostly distant forest fires and very little to no wind. The smokey skies kept the maximum temperatures down with an average daily temperature between 30 - 35 degrees C. The grapes for this single vineyard blend were all grown on our estate vineyard, within a stone's throw of each other in the River Rock Vineyard, which surrounds our winery in Oliver BC . The vines were planted in 2003. The vineyard is all on south facing slopes where soils are composed of rock, sand and gravel and rich in calcium, laid down during the last glacial recession.
Each varietal contained in the blend was hand picked and de-stemmed. Approximately 80% of the fruit was left whole, uncrushed. The grapes were cold soaked between 3 -5 days and then fermented in both stainless steel tanks. (2200, 2850, 5000 litre) and small fermentation totes to maximize skin to juice contact. The Cabernet Sauvignon was co fermented with some of the Merlot. Upon completion the wine was transferred to barrels where malolatic fermentation was completed. Wine was aged in French oak barrels (33% new) for approximately 12 months. Then following final blending, the wine was barrel aged an additional 6 months before final filtering and bottling resulting in the 2017 Corner Stone Blend.
