The growing season was very similar to 2019 with bud break in late April. However, 2020 experienced a cooler and wetter June than usual. The summer weather finally caught up the Pinot Gris came through to optimal ripeness in early September. The grapes for this single vineyard Pinot Gris were grown on our estate vineyard, River Rock Vineyards, planted in a location that allows the vine to thrive and mature fruit of a consistent quality and character. The vines were in their 18th leaf when the fruit was harvested. All of our vineyards are on south facing slopes where soils are composed of rock, sand, and gravel laid down during the last glacial recession.
The Pinot Gris was hand-picked in early September, at peak ripeness, and destemmed and pressed after a short period of skin contact time. The juice is then allowed to settle and racked to another stainless steel tank where it is inoculated with yeast starting the temperature controlled fermentation. A single commercial yeast strain was chosen for flavor and mouthfeel characteristics. Following fermentation, the wine spent several months on the finer lees before fining, blending, filtering and bottling.
Food Pairing Notes
This Pinot Gris pairs well with oysters on the half shell, prawns or scallops but because of its texture and mouth feel will hold up to grilled chicken or pork tenderloin.
