River Stone Estate Winery Wins Big in Spring Wine Competitions

River Stone is pleased to announce three wines have received awards from two competitions this spring. The Wine Align National Wine Awards of Canada awarded our 2019 Corner Stone a Gold Medal, and the Savor Northwest Wine Awards awarded our 2019 Merlot a Gold Medal and 2019 Reflections a Silver medal.

"We are very proud to have been recognized in these prestigious events, which highlight our Bordeaux style blends and identify River Stone as one of the finest wineries in the region,”  says Ted Kane, Owner and Winemaker.

The SavorNW Wine Awards creates awareness of the pacific northwest wine regions, showcasing the best of northwest wines. In fact, it’s one of the largest wine competitions open to all wineries in the Northwest.

WineAlign National Wine Awards is Canada’s largest competition for Canadian grown and produced wine. Since 2001, WineAlign has been evaluating wines from producers across Canada; in 2022 nearly 1,900 entries were received from over 250 wineries.

These wine competitions create awareness for new vintages and provide validation from well-respected judges. These trained judges rate different vintages, categories and brands of wine, tasted blind to prevent bias. A gold medal indicates a top score in both the quality and character of a wine. Meaning that it’s a wine worth seeking out - a must try!

Gold medal winner, the 2019 Corner Stone, is comprised of the five Bordeaux varietals; Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, it is a true representation of the rocky soils in our vineyards with its earthy minerality. It is rich and concentrated with bold ripe fruit and textures from mature tannins.

Nice freshness with polished, ripe tannins. Will age very well,” says Jennifer Huether, Reviewer for WineAlign.

The second Gold medal winner, 2019 Merlot, is medium bodied and made to showcase the ripe varietal fruit character that includes black cherry, sweet black berry, black current, and plum with a hint of French oak. It has balanced acidity and moderate tannins that are softening nicely with age.

The 2019 Reflections, a fortified red wine made in the tradition of vintage port, brings together the character of two of River Stone’s noble red grape varieties – Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The grapes were handpicked in late October, the final pick of the season.

All three of these award-winning wines are currently available for purchase on the website and in the wine shop.
